application

The Basics:

Name: Richard Hiner
Age: 18
Location: Colton, California.
Occupation: Student, poet, author.
How did you find out about this community? (Specify usernames if you remember them.) Through plastic-vinyl.

Personality Questions:

1) List and expand upon your three best traits / strengths. (These should be personality-related, not physical.)

- Sense of Humor: I always seem to know the right thing to say to make people laugh, regardless of their current state of emotion. I have been told, occasionally, that I should be a stand-up comedian; although my jokes rely mainly on pop-culture references as well as personal references. It is also very dry at times, and sarcastic, as well as unorthodox.

- Sense of Sacrifice: This one, I suppose, is perhaps my strongest - but among the most difficult to fully explain. There are times where I have been willing, and I have, to sacrifice my friendship with someone so that my friend can live a happy, stress-free life. The best I can further describe this is, I am more than willing to do whatever it takes to see my friends happy, even if it means sacrificing my own happiness to achieve that goal.

- Sense of Compassion: I am very compassionate, almost to the point of annoyance. My friends, my loved ones, they all applaud me for this. Even if you are someone I particularly dislike, if you are upset, then I will ensure that you are no longer upset. However, my compassion only goes so far. If you have wronged others, or have wronged me, I see no reason to share my compassion with you. What use is it then, if you will dismiss it so easily?

2) List and expand upon your three worst traits / weaknesses.

- Crippling Depression: There are times where I am struck with a depression which is so vast and mysteriously acquired, the ones I love the most can do little to bring me out of it. I see no point in living, no point of anything in life, almost something akin to apathy, just on a more extreme level. However, this depression never carries me into the regions of suicide, or self-harm. I can control it to a certain extent.

- Low Self-Esteem: This one is not circumstantial. I have always valued myself so low, placing myself lower than others, failing to see what makes me so great, so loving, so wonderful. Even now recently, when I have learned to accept myself, this self-esteem is as low as before. Perhaps even lower. I take compliments with denial, even though I eventually accept them, reluctantly.

- Laziness: This one is odd. It takes a lot for me to get anything started, but once I do get started, I am an extremely hard worker. At the start, I am apathetic, reluctant to do anything, but with time, I will eventually fulfill the task given to me.

3) Rate yourself on the following traits by putting an 'X' in the box you think fits best. (E.g. if you are slightly more introverted than extroverted, put an 'X' in the second box.) Explain your choice as well.

Introverted [ ] [ ] [X] [ ] [ ] Extroverted

Explain: I am in between an Introvert and an Extrovert. I enjoy reflecting upon life, and solitary activities such as reading, writing, or walking, even cleaning, bring a profound peace upon me. But I am also talkative and enthusiastic when it comes to certain things.

Cheerful [ ] [ ] [X] [ ] [ ] Gloomy

Explain: Again, like the above, I am in the middle. There are times when I am extremely cheerful, and others where I am extremely gloomy.

Leader [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] [X] Supportive

Explain: I do not particularly enjoy being a leader due to the stress that comes with it, as well as the countless decisions one must make.

Confident [ ] [ ] [ ] [X] [ ] Modest

Explain: As noted above, I am extremely modest, but there are times when I can be confident.

Reserved [ ] [ ] [X] [ ] [ ] Impulsive

Explain: It's.. hard to explain this one.

Energetic [ ] [ ] [X] [ ] [ ] Calm

Explain: Once more, depends, really.

Feminine [ ] [X] [ ] [ ] [ ] Masculine/Tomboyish

Explain: I may be male, but I enjoy things that are generally considered feminine. Flowers, poetry, photography, love.

4) Describe how you typically work in teams. Is it generally a good experience, or do you prefer working by yourself? Do you like to lead and make decisions or do you prefer to let others make decisions so that you can do the legwork? You may find it helpful to give an example of a team you worked on recently and how that went.

I enjoy working by myself, because I do not want to bring the team down. I am not very reliable, unfortunately, when it comes to certain tasks.

5) What interests/hobbies do you have? How do you like to spend your free time?

Reading, writing poetry, writing novels, writing short stories, writing out random thoughts, listening to music, watching TV/anime, learning.

6) Describe one to three careers you would find ideal, with a little explanation of why it appeals to you.

Author - I love writing & reading.

Poet - I love expressing myself through abstract poetry, I also love reading poetry.

Teacher - I love learning and I love helping others.

FF Questions:

7) List one to three favorite Final Fantasy games and why you like them. Sequels/spin-offs/non-numbered/KH/Dissidia games are okay.

In order:

Final Fantasy X - This one is perhaps the most emotional of them all to me. Tidus' story is just so lovely and heartwrenching and humorous and perfect. Each and every character is fleshed out perfectly, the environments are lovely, the soundtrack is dream and euphoria-inducing and it has perhaps one of my favorite songs of all-time; To Zanarkand.

Final Fantasy IV - This one is perhaps the most epic of them all to me. The soundtrack fits perfectly whenever it's played, the characters are tragic but heroic, and the whole moral theme of betrayal and friendship just truly touches me like no other.

Final Fantasy VI - This was formerly my favorite one until I replayed through X and IV. The whole rebellion thing was always something I enjoyed in fiction. Also, Kefka is perhaps one of the most twisted, insane and genuinely scary villains I've ever encountered. The music is also brilliant in this game, Terra's Theme is just so poignant, so powerful, so. . amazing. The Decisive Battle (boss theme) is my favorite boss theme in the series, Force Your Way (FFVIII) being my second.

8) List one to three of your favorite Final Fantasy characters and why:

Tidus: As explained above, his story is particularly emotional, heartwrenching, gut-tearing, just wonderful. Despite his whiny/overexcited attitude that was disliked by many players, I enjoyed it. It was a nice change of pace from Cloud, and Squall. Zidane was also that welcome change of pace, but at times his attitude felt a little forced. Tidus, however, had perfectly good reason (not saying Zidane didn't. That's a whole 'nother story.) to act the way he did.

Cecil: There is so much to say about him. Not only did he have a major character development happen about halfway through the storyline, but he's had more betrayal than most anybody else I can think of in the Final Fantasy universe. His personality is just, well, it's hard to explain without spoiling it for anybody else. So I'll just say that it's complex, never static, and his relationship with Golbez is perhaps one of the most rewarding I've seen yet in a FF game.

9) One to three characters you relate to (you may reuse answers from #8 if applicable) and why:

Tidus: Yes, I am a huge fan of Tidus. I actually can't relate with Tidus on a lot of issues, but perhaps the..hm, loneliness, I suppose? In a way, even though he was a Guardian, and he did have Yuna, and everybody else, no one really, truly, understood him. Or maybe that's what he believes, because of Jecht constantly putting him down, he believes nobody really understands him and that everybody inherently has a dislike of him. I can relate to that in so many ways, though I will not go into too much detail. I just feel that people never understand me, even when I openly discuss my feelings with them.

10) The FF game you liked playing least: That would be Final Fantasy XII. It's not a bad game, nor is it a bad Final Fantasy game (even though I believe it should have been kept in the Tactics series and not as a numbered FF game), but for some reason the battle system, the music, the character development system, almost everything about it bugs me and I have no idea why. I intend to give it another go soon, though.

11) One to three FF characters you dislike and why:

Surprisingly, I don't dislike any FF character. They all have their quirks, their advantages, their disadvantages.

12) Favorite weapon in a Final Fantasy game (either the name if you liked the name, or a picture if you liked the look of it, or a description if it had awesome stats/abilities): Excalibur in any variation, any FF game it's been in. Perhaps this is rooted in my deep fascination for Morte d' Arthur or as many others know it, the King Arthur tales.

13) Your favorite Final Fantasy summon (e.g. Ifrit, Carbuncle, Bahamut, etc.): The Crusaders, FFVI.

14) Your favorite spell/ability/technique that can be learned in a Final Fantasy game (e.g. Esuna, Steal, special finishes/overdrives such as Tifa's Final Heaven limit break, etc.): Blue Magic, or Enemy Skill in FFVII's case. I just find it so innovative you can learn an enemy's ability after they've attacked you with it, then use it against that same enemy. Almost like an eye for an eye, no?

15) A Final Fantasy mini-game/sidequest you invested entirely too much time into: Like many others, perhaps, I invested way too much time into the Chocobo Search mini-game in FFIX, just to get to Ozma, which I also spent way too much time in trying to beat him.

16) Your favorite Cid: FFIV's Cid, without a doubt. He made perhaps one of the most heroic sacrifices in FF history, and he still wasn't done.

17) Optional: Up to one class you think does not fit you, with reasoning why. Monk, if only because even though I enjoy peace and tend to avoid conflict, I am prone to bouts of anger.

I'm getting both a sense of a White Mage and a Dragoon from you. You are loyal, reliable and caring, but in the end I found that the caring and the sensitivity are the elements that stood out to me the most so:

White Mage

Thieves

[identity profile] cowturtle.livejournal.com 2011-06-01 05:53 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, this one was a little tough, and I was also caught between Dragoon and White Mage, but then I looked at the example characters, and you remind me a lot of Yuna, I think. She has a certain sadness to her, but she's very supportive of those around her and manages to stay cheerful, despite dark times.

Thus: white mage

[identity profile] thedrowned.livejournal.com 2011-06-01 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
Ah. This was a bit tough. Because you have a bit of a dragoon streak that I want to cater to. And yet, there seems to be some kind of gentle side that I think takes over the dragoon I want to say you are. Therefore, I will be a super sheep to-day and say you best fit as a White Mage. Even white mages can have their shy and dark moments, and I think it's fair to say that those things you love in life and reality are a sense of beauty only a white mage can truly possess. What's more, your compassion. It's incredible, and no amount of convincing me will make me assume something other than a white mage could contain as much compassion as you do.

Oooh, Morte d'Arthur!

Anyway. I can see some Dragoon and some White Mage, but overall I think I'm voting White Mage, especially because your strengths/weaknesses are things I tend to relate with White Mages most. They're more conflict-avoiding - they won't necessarily back away from it, but I think they prefer solutions that don't hurt people. Also, throughout your application there's a sensitivity and caring to other people that really makes me think of White Mage. They aren't always cheerful, either: people like Garnet and Yuna usually do have lower self-esteem and a somewhat sad outlook on life.

Welcome to [livejournal.com profile] ff_land, anyway, and I hope you have fun!

I've gotta agree with everyone else that you sound like a White Mage! But of the melancholy type. You seem very supportive of and empathetic toward others (to the point of not listing any least favorite characters, even :P). You also said you can make people laugh and that kind of thing reminds me of a white mage.

[identity profile] xinnk.livejournal.com 2011-06-01 08:06 am (UTC)(link)
I'm going to be sheep-like and agree with everyone else. You sound very much like a White Mage to me. While there seems to be a Dragoon streak in you, in general, the app felt very empathetic and compassionate to me. There is a great emphasis on emotions and your feelings towards events, and that to me is one of the hallmarks of White Mages.

This is going to be super unoriginal of me, but I have to agree with White Mage as well! Actually, most of your strengths/weaknesses fit the White Mage job class to me (White Mages like Minwu, Yuna, Aerith, and Aria all have either senses of humor as well as senses of sacrifice and compassion...while other White Mages such as Vanille, Ovelia, or Garnet have problems with depression and low self-esteem). White Mages can be both extroverted and introverted depending on the circumstances, and they can be in-between cheerful and gloomy as well. Many White Mage characters fit more supportive roles in leader situations as well given their healing abilities and tendency to listen...and they're often modest with times when their inner-confidence shows through. I can see many White Mages being described as in-between reserved or impulsive and they can be either energetic or calm depending on the situation.

While your answer to the team work question had me leaning slightly more towards Dragoon, I think I could see a lot of White Mages agreeing with your I do not want to bring the team down sentiment. I could also picture your ideal careers being very fitting for most White Mage characters as well! :)

~Yay, a FFX and FFIV fan (and a FFVI one as well...I need to play that game, lolz)! ♥

I could definitely see where the mentions of Dragoon is coming from, though overall I think I have to agree with everyone before me and say White Mage for you as well. Quite a few White Mage characters have a surprisingly good sense of humor, can be rather sacrificing if they believe it is for the greater good or for the good of those they care for, and are very compassionate characters (Minwu, Yuna, Aerith, Garnet, Aria, Sara Altney, Prishe, etc.)...and some of them do have problems with depression and low self-esteem at times too (Prishe, Alus, Vanille, Ovelia, and Garnet for examples), so I could definitely picture many White Mage characters in your strengths and weaknesses. White Mage characters are often seen to be in-between introverted and extroverted in their mannerisms: there are extremes on either spectrum at times, but characters such as Minwu, Alma, Rosa, Yuna, Garnet, Sara Altney, Hope, Shirma, and Penelo seem pretty balanced on that front--enjoying having peaceful and thoughtful times to themselves, but have no issue with speaking up on what they feel strongly about either.

Many White Mage characters also tend to be a balance between gloomy and cheerful too as they can fall to either category depending on what is happening around them at times. They also tend to be very supportive characters in their respective groups too, and while there are instances where they can showcase confidence...quite a few White Mages can be rather modest too. Many White Mage characters can be in-between reserved and impulsive as well (characters like Yuna, Porom, Garnet, Aria, and Hope kind of exemplify this)...and the same thing can be said for their energy levels too in that regard.

I could see you fitting into a White Mage role even due to your regards on why you would prefer to work alone (since your main concern was possibly letting someone down in a group setting), and I could see quite a few White Mages perhaps appreciating quite a few of your ideal jobs (Minwu, Porom, Alma, and Garnet in particular). So yes, my vote goes to White Mage as well! :D

I loved reading your thoughts on the FF series, by the way! ♥

I 100% TOTALLY AGREE with everyone else. You're app SCREAMS white mage. BUT.

I think that maybe certain personality traits such as :

- Crippling Depression
- Low Self-Esteem
- Laziness

Kind of have me leaning towards a Black Mage for you :) even if i'm the only one voting this way :D

Oh honey. You're such a White Mage, no doubt about it. Even the traits that might be considered dragoon-like, such as the depression, can be white mage-like: Garnet, for instance, falls into a deep apathy. You're creative and feminine and a nice balance of introversion vs. extroversion - all of these things are exceedingly White Mage, especially when you put them all together.

Image

[identity profile] lumati.livejournal.com 2011-06-02 12:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Let me just start off by saying that I personally don't feel like there's anything inherently feminine about enjoying flowers, poetry, photography, and love. I don't think there should be anything masculine or feminine about enjoying the beautiful things in life. :)

I also want to point out that bouts of anger don't really disqualify you from the Monk class. I mean Snow from XIII is the consummate FF monk and I'd say that he's just as prone to getting angry as anyone. Same with Zell from VIII.

That said, I have to agree with the majority and say White Mage for you. I admittedly feel a little silly for stating reasons when everyone seems to have covered all the bases and then some though.

[identity profile] the-404-error.livejournal.com 2011-06-02 04:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes~ Another fan of IV and VI ♦

Anyway, I was trying to come up with an alternative, and I kind of can see the earlier!Monks (which are more like actual peaceful and calm monks-- i.e. Yang), but as you mentioned, aspects of those don't fit either. The monks here also seem to gear more towards the later ones which have more street-brawler personalities, so I don't think you'd fit in with the general mentality there.

I can also see bits of a black mage, especially since some of them can be self-sacrificing (Doga, Palom, and Lulu - who did offer to become the final aeon - per example) Your overall personality would also fit in with characters like Vivi, but as a whole black mages are more likely to be outspoken about negatives and aren't as 100% supportive.

... which leads me to what almost everyone else said about you fitting in with the White Mage category. I can't really add on that without repeating what everyone else has said by this point, however. (... but, randomly, it does disappoint me that people are considered more masculine or feminine over minor interests. DX Silly gender generalizations, I do not like them. + You deserve 50 courage points for awesomely defying them.)

Aww, definitely White Mage. You just exude kindness throughout your app, and even the things you liked and related to in games and characters (ie, FFIV's friendship and betrayal, Tidus's loneliness), seems very gentle and sad. I'm very surprised to see someone picking FFIV's Cid as their favourite, and that definitely matches what you said earlier about sacrifice. I'm a little amused at your liking Blue Magic; seems almost vengeful. XD But even white mages don't have to be fluffy and sweet all the time.

I'm in the same boat as demuredreams. I see you as a black mage more than anything. You want to have blue magic which is more towards black mage status in this game, you love to write, and black mages are helpers too.

TEAM MONK

[identity profile] freijya.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 08:30 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm...I see where all the white mage votes are coming from. Your writing style is very eloquent and shows particular care in the way you express yourself. But you seem to be a person that experiences emotions in the extreme, even if not often, and I generally see white mages as more even tempered. I am actually tempted to go with a Thief vote because of your sense of humor and your preference for a supportive role. Maybe I'm thinking too much of Zidane here, but when a thief gets down, they get DOWN, and that depression is very crippling. However, your sense of loyalty is more befitting a Monk or Dragoon, and most Thieves have a strong sense of self.

Because I don't think you fit in the role of a Soldier as ff_land describes, I'm going to have to place you in Black Mage. And this is mostly because you believe you wouldn't fit in with Monks, because otherwise I might have put that (there are many monks who are not peaceful and conflict avoiding, such as Amarant and to an extent Tifa and Snow). I don't remember many white mages caving in to bouts of anger, but Black Mages are generally subject to an intense range of emotions.
